Traction Motors & Main Ropes

Geared traction machines are driven by AC or DC electric motors. In this design, power is transmitted through a worm-and-gear-type reduction unit, which turns the hoisting sheave. Although the lift speeds are slower than those in typical gearless elevators, the gear reduction allows for effective load handling.

Characteristics of Geared Traction Machines:

  • They require a less powerful motor to turn the sheave compared to gearless systems.
  • These elevators typically operate at speeds ranging from 38 to 152 meters (125–500 ft) per minute and can carry loads of up to 13,600 kilograms (30,000 lb).
  • An electrically controlled brake, located between the motor and the reduction unit, stops the elevator and holds the car at the desired floor level.

In residential buildings and low-traffic commercial applications, single-speed or two-speed AC hoist machines are commonly used. With the availability of cost-effective solid-state AC drives, infinitely variable speed AC motors can now be used universally. This brings the benefits of older motor-generator-based systems, without the disadvantages in efficiency and complexity.
